Considering he horribly tortured, killed, enslaved, and raped the natives, the Taíno people, I'd say he wasn't too bright. He was cruel and thought that he could successfully announce his Christianity and claim his superiority by dreadfully hurting innocent people and committing crimes against humanity.

No. Let's use an analogy. We do not know if there are other universes besides our own. We do not yet know completely what is in a Black Hole. We do not know what exists in the deepest trench in the ocean. We have never seen the core of the earth--though scientists hypothesize about what it is. Now, do any of these make us all idiots--no. Columbus was a visionary to even hypthesize he could make a trip to another land. He was brave to even set sail. Even though he misidentified where he landed, how could he have known when no historical account before him gave this information. Just because we are unaware of something doesn't make us idiiots or stupid--and neither was Christopher Columbus. Neither are you for not knowing how to do the complex math formulas used on space craft during explorations or for not knowing what exists beyond our universe.
