To the Hebrews, Rephaim (or Refaim, sing: ha-rafa) could indeed be giants, but they could also be shades of the dead. In other words, they were unknown but fearsome beings. The Ugaritic texts also associate the Rephaim with the dead and the Ugaritic god Rapha'u seems to dwell in Ashtarot and Edrei, just where biblical tradition places the Hebrew giant Rephaim. These associations are, in themselves, sufficient evidence that the Rephaim never really existed.
Not only did the Rephaim, and their relatives the Anakim, never really exist, Goliath is also a figure of myth. For biblical purposes, we could consider Goliath a member of either race, but not for historical purposes.

Did giants exist?
Yes, according to tradition there were several races of giants. The fact that giants are mentioned not only in Israelite traditions, but also by the Greeks, Romans, Celts, Hindus, Norse, Basques, Japanese and others, in our opinion warrants more than mere dismissal.
