Yes, he probably was. It appears he held the high ground and was in good order. The Normans had their backs to the sea. It might have been difficult to disloge Harold had he stood his ground & demanded the Normans come to him again & again to be repelled time & again. Did he get one in the eye ? I don't suppose we will ever really know, but it appears to be an example of a battle the Normans should have lost, but they didn't.
