The first Islamic call to praying (A'zan) was said by Bilal Ibn Ribah. He was an Ethiopian and born in Mecca in the late 6th century. The prophet Muhammad chose Bilal as the caller for praying (Mua'zzin). He was among the slaves that were freed by Abu Bakr. He was one of the very early Islam followers.
Hazrat Bilal (RAU) was slave of Utba. He embraced Islam. Utba tortured him in many ways. He was made to lie on burning sand with a heavy stone on his chest. His master used all means of torture to make him renounce Islam. Hazrat Bilal (RAU) faced all hardships with examplery courage, and stood his ground. Hazrat Abu Bakar Siddique (RAU) bought him and set him free. He remained at the house of the Last Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (May peace be upon him). He was considered the member of the holy Prophet's family. He used to announce the call to prayer (Aazan). He was greatly respected by even the Caliphs.
