Adolf Hitler himself was a cause of the Holocaust. Hitler was obsessed with the destruction of the Jews. Documents that have become accessible since WWII seem to point at the fact that he probably suffered from syphilis acquired as a youth in Austria and, left untreated, resurged later in life.

That question is one which is still debated today. There are two views, Structuralists and Intentionalists. The Structuralists believed Hitler was a weak leader and the Holocaust was the result decisions made by the Third Reich and various Nazi agencies. They also believe Hitler's initial goal was simply deportation of the Jews, and extermination was only a "last resort" The Intentionalists believe Hitler had planned the Holocaust from the beginning. Mein Kampf shows the level of Hitler's anti-Semitism as well as hatred towards other groups which he wrote years before he came to power after his arrest at the Beer Hall Putsch. But if you ask who planned it, that is not definite. The operation was carried out by the SS (who ran the concentration camps) and was supervised by Himmler. ___ The usual terms are intentionalists and functionalists. The latter do not necessarily think that Hitler was a 'weak' dictator, simply that he was subject to pressures from below, like any dictator.

When the Holocaust started and ended?

The holocaust began on Dec.8, 1941 in Chelmno and ended on May 9, 1945.___The Holocaust took place from 1941 to 1945. Under Adolf Hitler. After Hitler's armies began to take over neighboring countries, a "final solution" to the "Jewish question" was formulated. This plan produced the Holocaust in which 6 million Jews were murdered. At death camps, Jews were forced to labor until they had exhausted their strength. Those too old, young, or feeble to work were killed in specially built gas chambers; their bodies were then cremated. ___The systematic mass murders began in 1941. One can take the Holocaust back to the Kristallnacht, but most historians confine to the "Final Solution". (Until mid 1941 Jews were able to leave Germany and Nazi occupied territory, if they could find somewhere to go to).1. Regular mass gassings started at Chelmno on 8 December 1941. 2. The Wannsee Conference, which co-ordinated the various agencies involved in the Holocaust - the SS, the German railways, the ordinary police, etc. - took place on 20 January 1942.

What do historians say about Holocaust denial?

Historians of the relevant period and countries and Holocaust scholars overwhelmingly reject Holocaust denial. What's more, they take a very dim view of the tactics of Holocaust deniers, regarding the latter as unscholarly, unscrupulous and downright dishonest. They don't even regard Holocaust denial as 'junk history'.See, for example, the scathing comments of Professor Richard J. Evans.See the links below and these two books by Deborah Lipstadt and the book by Richard Evans:Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory (1994). Did Hitler order the Holocaust?

The Holocaust may not have been officially suggested by Hitler but in the book he wrote while in prison, Mein Kampf, he wrote about the "Jewish peril" - that is, a (supposed) conspiracy of the Jews to gain world leadership to corrupt the world with their ideas. He saw the Jews and other non-Aryan groups as what was bringing down Germany from prosperity and success, so it can be seen that indeed the Holocaust was Hitler's idea.

How did Hitler prevent German citizens from realizing the magnitude of the Holocaust?

Hitler was smart when it came to keeping the holocaust a well kept secret. He did this by eliminating the people that knew about it and were telling the German people about it. Also most of the concentration camps were organized and placed outside of small cities in Germany where not many people would see them. When the allies came across these camps they had no clue what they were and immediately called back to there commanders and that is how the news of the holocaust came out. Also Hitler was an outstanding public speaker and could really say anything and have the public believe him.
