We know nothing of the life of Homer, except what we can deduce from what is in the poems themselves. All the documentary evidence we have about the author of the poems was written down centuries after the poems, and most of it is self-contradictory (at least seven ancient cities claimed to be Homer's birthplace).
Scholarship can date Homer to the seventh or eight century BC with a reasonable amount of certainty, and the language of the poems seems to be mainly Ionian.
