Yes, even before he became a musician. He used to write and illustrate his own stories, poetry and books. He kept a notebook in school, called The Daily Howl, with parodies of current pop culture and his teachers, that he passed around class. (It was confiscated, but made the rounds of the teaching staff, and was eventually returned to him.) He also wrote a biography of The Beatles, that was published in Mersey Beat when they were still just a local band. Brian Epstein showed some of Lennon's works to a publisher, who signed him up, and two books were later published, titled John Lennon In His Own Write, and A Spaniard in the Works. They sold pretty well, and were reprinted after his death. Yoko Ono published a third book in 1986, titled Skywriting by Word of Mouth, that contained an autobiography of his life with her.
