Jesus, himself, also asked this question of the pharisees at Matthew 22:41-45 citing the prophecy at Psalm 110:1(1 Corinthians 15:25/Hebrews 10:12+13).
A scripture that might seem confusing is found at Matthew 1:1 which says:
'The book of the history of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham'. He was not the literal next-generation 'son' of David, as he lived on earth many generations later, but Jesus, as the promised Messiah, came through the line of Abraham and David, through the Jewish lineage(Matthew 1:1-16), as prophesied at Genesis 22:18.
(1 Chronicles 17:11)(Matthew 9:27)(Luke 1:32)(Matthew 12:22+23). He was thus David's 'son' or descendant, as was Joseph, Jesus' father, who was also called "son of David" for the same reason(Matthew 1:20). The Messiah would come through the legal lineage of David and Abraham, the Israelite nation.(Isaiah 9:7/Romans 1:3).
In addition, many of the prophesies about Solomon(David's literal 'son') were also, in the larger fulfillment, about Jesus (the 'greater Solomon'/Matthew 12:42/Revelation 19:16) and what he would accomplish as the future King of God's Kingdom, ruling peacefully ...not just for a short time, but forever.(Psalm 72/Zechariah 9:9+10/ Matthew 21:5/Revelation 5:13+14)
Also, many feel that Jesus was NOT God, but rather 'the SON of God'(Matthew 16:16), a 'twig' from the root of Jesse (David's father)(Isaiah 11:1+10). This 'twig' or 'branch' is spoken of again at Jeremiah 23:5 where the American Standard Version of The Bible says: "Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land."(Jeremiah 33:15/John 1:45)
