Yes and no. The legend gained in fame in the Middle Ages, but it really took off much later in the late 1700's and 1800's. The basis comes from the Early Middle Ages and it slowly grew and changed over time into what we have today. Historians are not sure if there really was a king by the name or where Camelot would have been.
