In the Bible which of the twelve tribes was Moses a member of?

The tribe of Levi, his bloodline is depicted in the Old Testament in the book of Exodus

What did the 12 sons of Jacob represent?

A:Biblical tradition does indeed say that Jacob's sons became the founders of the twelve tribes of Israel, each of which was named after its founder. Jacob, or Israel as he is also called, had twelve sons, including Levi. Levi is recorded as the father of the Levite priest and therefore did not found a tribe. Joseph's two sons, The sons of Joseph, Ephraim and Menasseh, were named as founder of tribes, instead of Joseph and Levi, thus making the required number of twelve tribes. A careful reading of the Bible suggests a very different story. The Book of Judges preserves an ancient poem from the late second millennium and considered to be the earliest reference to the Hebrew tribes. This is usually called the Song of Deborah (Judges 5:2-31), and the poet honours those tribes of Israel that joined in battle against a Canaanite coalition and castigates those that held back. It seems there were only ten tribes at this early stage, named as: Reuben, Benjamin, Ephraim, Manasseh, Zebulon, Issachar, Dan, Naphtali, Asher, Gilead, to which we could add Levi. This list notably omits Judah, Simeon and Gad, but has Gilead, as well as the otherwise unknown Meroz, which could have been an eleventh tribe. This and some other obscure passages suggests the evolution of the Hebrew tribal system, rather than the patrilineal version more commonly accepted.

What is the smallest tribe of the twelve tribes of israel?

Today, the only tribes with large numbers are those of Judah, Levi, Benjamin and (probably) Simeon. All the rest were exiled to points now unknown. They have some descendants among the known Jewish people today, but relatively few; and it's impossible to determine exactly who they are.

Who are the 12 tribes in the Bible?

Assuming you are referring to the twelve tribes of Israel, here they are: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph and Benjamin. These are the twelve sons of the patriarch Jacob (as in "Jacob and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", and they were born in that order. All of them except Judah and Benjamin (often referred to as "the half-tribe of Benjamin") have been lost, leading to the name "the ten lost tribes". There are lots of conspiracy theories involved there.

What was the origin of the twelve tribes of Israel?

Looking in to the Hebrew Bible , Jacob (progenitor of Israel) had 12 sons. The twelve sons fathered the twelve Tribes of Israel. * When the land of Israel was apportioned among the tribes in the days of Joshua , the Tribe of Levi , being priests, did not receive land (Joshua 13:33, 14:3). However; the tribe of Levi was given cities. Six cities were given to the tribe as refuge cities for all men of Israel and they were to be controlled by the Levites. Three of these cities were located on each opposing side of the Jordan River. In addition, 42 other cities (and their respective open spaces) totaling 48 cities were given to the Tribe of Levi. (Numbers 35) * On the other hand, Jacob elevated the descendants of Ephraim and Manasseh (the two sons of Joseph by his Egyptian wife Asenath ) (Genesis 41:50) to the status of full tribes in their own right, replacing the Tribe of Joseph. Each received its own land and had its own encampment during the 40 years of wandering in the desert.

Who are the thelve tribes of Israel?

The twelve tribes of Israel are the descendants of the twelve sons of the biblical patriach who was originally called 'Jacob', but had his name changed to 'Israel' . (Jacob was the grandson of Abraham.) Jacob's 12 sons were:- -Reuben -Simeon -Levi -Judah -Issachar -Zebulun -Dan -Naphtali -Gad -Asher -Joseph -Benjamin Jacob/Israel had 12 sons of his own, (Reuben to Benjamin), so, in that respect, Israel had 12 sons: all through the Bible God refers to the "twelve tribes" of Israel. However, the tribe of Levi was separated by God to be a tribe of priests [See Numbers 1:50-51]: all the priests of Israel were to come from the tribe of Levi, and they were not to go to war or be counted in a census [Numbers 1:49], and Israel also adopted Joseph's 2 sons (Ephraim and Manasseh) as his own [Genesis 48:15]. This adds up to more than 12 tribes, but the number of tribes in Scripture is always twelve, depending on the terms of reference and purpose required, done by adding or dropping tribes as required. When the actual sons of Israel are added it comes to 12. When Levi is excluded (eg war or census) this number is reduced to 11 if Joseph is counted, but it becomes 12 when Ephraim and Manasseh (Joseph's 2 sons) are included instead of the tribe of Joseph. When Dan is excluded from the sealing (that is, protection) of the 144,000 in the Tribulation [ Revelation 7:5-8; the 144.000 are a missionary corps of redeemed jews who are instrumental in the salvation of many jews and gentiles during the Tribulation] ( this exclusion is because of Dan introducing idol worship into Israel [See 1Kings 12:30 ] ) this number is again reduced to 11, but it becomes 12 when Manasseh is included as well as Joseph .
