Gruffudd ap Llywelyn, the man in question here however, was his father. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London with his eldest son, Llywellyn ap Gruffydd's elder brother, Owain. On 1st March 1244, while trying to escape, Gruffydd fell and was killed. It is said he hit the ground head first with such force that his head was pushed into his shoulders.
