Marie Antoinette married at only 14, and her husband was known to be corpulent and ugly. He completely ignored her and left for hunting, and they didn't have an heir until after 8 years of being married. But eventually it was known that they became good friends, but they were really never in love.

It was an arranged marriage, arranged by the King of France Louis XV and the Empress of Austria, Maria Theresia.

Marie Antoinette married Louis XVI when she was 14 and he was 15. Louis XVI had always been taught that Austrians were not to be trusted (France had been at war with Austria for several years and this arranged marriage was kind of a truce and to improve the relation between France and Austria) and he was also very shy in the presence of women.

He therefore treated her in a kind, but distant way, trying to escape her presence in every way and neglecting her. The first few years were like this, and they were also not intimate with each other in the bedroom for 7 years.

Their relationship grew though, as they became friends, really good friends that knew they could trust one another. Louis XVI eventually actually included Marie Antoinette in making political decisions (something that had never been done before by a King).

I don't think there was passionate love between them. It was more of a respectful friendship. They did have 4 children though, because as the King and Queen they had to provide heirs to the throne.

Why was King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette married?

Marie Antoinette married Louis XVI (not xiv) after her parents who were the the leaders of the Holy Roman Empire, and his Grandfather (king Louis XV) arranged their marriage. It was a marriage of convenience for the purposes of joining alliances not for love as the two had never met until after they had already been married by proxy.

How is Cleopatra similar to Marie Antoinette?

Cleopatra was a Queen of Eygpt, famous for her love affair with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, she is also the main character in Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra" Marie Antoinette, was Austrian Born, but married the Dauphin of France, and became the Queen of France, she was arrested for running away with her family and beheaded, and therefore was the last Queen of France!

Why was Marie Antoinette important?

Marie Antoinette was born November 2,1755 in Austria, the daughter of Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor and Austrian Empress Maria Theresa. She was also born on the same day as the famous earthquake of Lisbon. She was the queen of France at the outbreak of the French Revolution. In 1770 she was married to the French Dauphin, who 4 years later ascended the throne as Louis XVI. The personalities of the two rulers were very different while Louis XVI was phlegmatic and withdrawn, Marie Antoinette was strong, but care free. Marie Antoinette was imprudent in her actions and choice of friends. She soon became unpopular in the court and the country, making many of the nobles furious, including the King's brothers and those Frenchmen who regretted the recently concluded alliance with Austria, long regarded as the traditional enemy for the population. As a whole, she became the symbol for the extravagance to the court. What you have to understand farmost about Marie Antoinette is that she was a young girl, a very young girl, who's only education in life was how to be an aristocrat. She wasn't even raised to be a queen, her mother, the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, was far to busy ruling the country and left Marie Antoinette's education in the hands of her governesses who spoiled the girl (after all, she was very pretty & charming, and was the youngest of the girls in the family), doing her homework for her so Marie Antoinette did not have to do it herself. The poor girl had a hard life in France. First as the Dauphine (the wife of the next King of France), she had little knowledge of France and it's customs. She was not accustomed to the size, riches and amoral values that was the court of France at this time. Not to mention that her relationship with her husband, Louis XVI was a rather odd one. It took quite some time for the marriage to be consummated, and for them to produce a child (8 years). During that time, the Dauphine had to listen to all the rumors that the court and the country were spreading about her (her marriage was a sham and her husband was an imbecile and impotent). She was also extremely homesick (she missed her sisters and mother greatly). Marie was well-known to have spent wildly as a young queen before tempering things as she matured. The daughter of Francis I and Maria Theresa, Emperor and Empress of the Holy Roman Empire, Marie left Austria for France in 1770 to marry the prince of France. In 1774 the prince became King Louis XVI and Marie became queen. As revolution swept Paris in 1789, the king and queen tried to flee but failed. While the revolutionaries were trying to hash out a new system of government, Marie and Louis XVI were stuck as prisoners at the palace Le Tuileries. They tried to get help from royal supporters in England, Prussia and Austria, but in 1792 they were arrested and charged with treason. Louis was beheaded 21 January 1793 and Marie was beheaded 16 October 1793. One of the first things to remember about Marie Antoinette is that for most of her life she was bored. Raised at one court and married into another at fourteen. Also when she was born she had already been promised for marriage. Marie Antoinette's last words were an apology to the executioner after accidentally stepping on his foot… Marie Antoinette was played by Kristen Dunst in the 2006 film of Marie Antoinette directed by Sofia Coppola.

Who was Louis the fourteenth married to?

Marie-Therese of Austria. Louis XIV had 2 wives--one was a queen and the other was a morgantic wife--married but not equal in rank as she was not royalty. His first wife was Marie Therese of Austria and his second was Madame de Maintenon, Frances Aubigne Marie-Therese of Austria was Infanta(Princess) of Spain and a Habsburg. She married Louis XIV as part of a peace treaty with Spain. She was very inbred and was possibly developmentally delayed(her brother Charles II of Spain was retarded and deformed). She was Louis' double first cousin. She is the queen who supposedly originally said "let them eat cake". Madame Maintenon was the widow of a poor poet and she was minor nobility but she was the governess of the King's illegitmate children and he grew to love her and he married her after the death of the queen. Madame Maintenon was not crowned because she had no royal blood but she was made a Marquise and she ruled over the court as if she was a crowned queen.

Was queen Marie Antoinette gay?

It was indeed rumoured that the French Queen Marie Antoinette was a lesbian. In those days, that word did not exist yet, and the proper way of saying that a lady was gay was "she is performing the German vice". Eversince Marie Antoinette was Austrian and is Austria they spoke (and still speak) German, a lot of jokes were made about this similarity. Marie Antoinette was the first queen in history (all around the world), that actually had pants made for her to go horse riding. Pants were mens clothing and a woman, let alone a queen, was absolutely not supposed to wear such manly things. She also rode her horse the way men did, with one leg on each side of the horse, and eversince at that time it was accustomed that ladies rode the horse with two legs on one side, that also provoked Hugh rumours about her sexual preference. And also because Marie Antoinette had great friendships with some of her court ladies (Princess de Lamballe, Yolanthe de Polignac), people started to print pornographic pamphlets that had drawings of her in an orgy with her court ladies. Though, Marie Antoinette was straight and actually fell in love with Count Fersen. She stayed close to him her whole life. If the two ever really had the love affair consumed, was never proven.

How was Marie Antoinette's love life?

Well, she had to marry Louis XVI, the crownprince and soon to be King of France, as it was an arranged marriage. There was never any sexual or romantic attraction between them, but they did become good friends eventually. They realized this was their fate. Marie Antoinette is said to have fallen in love with Count Axel von Fersen, aSwedish count. She met him when she was 18 and it was said that eversince they met, they both fell in love. Count Fersen kept coming to court and rumors spread wildly. Until the end of her life they kept in touch. Some of their letters have been preserved and can still be viewed today in the Versailles museum. Though, Fersen burned most of them. His letters to his sister concerning his relationship with a certain "Josephine" (which was his cover-up name for Marie Antoinette) are also preserved. He kept a journal, but until this day, the journal is still with his family and they refuse to publicize it. Fersen never married, he wrote to his sister that the one woman he wanted to marry was not available to him, and that is why he would remain unmarried. It was also rumoured that the second son of Marie Antoinette, the late Louis XVII, was actually his son, but this has never been proven. It has also never been proven that the relationship between Marie Antoinette and Fersen was actually a physical one. Though, the Fersen family keeps his journal secret, as Fersen would have wanted it to. One can only imagine what would happen if these journals were made public and the whole world might learn that the young dauphin Louis XVII was NOT Louis XVI's son, but Fersen's...
