Yes he is (he's still alive as of July 2013 - barely). His party, the African National Congress, is a socialist political party which runs for elections on joint lists with the Communist Party. Other liberty idols such as Mahatma Gandhi, the 14th Dalai Lama and Aung San Suu Kyi were/are also socialists, or have associated themselves with socialist movements and political parties at some point.
