According to The Bible, God told Noah to make an ark out of 'gopher' wood, a wood entirely unknown to scholars today. Based on the etymology of the word and the widespread use of reed boats in very early times, some scholars say that gopher wood meant reeds. It has been noted that boats made of reeds were quite seaworthy and could not be engulfed by the waves. Of course, this assumes that the biblical story of Noah's Ark was based on much earlier legends originating at a time before timber construction became normal.
Noah's ark was made out of Gopher wood. It is also called cypress wood as it comes from the cypress tree.
