Roman Catholic AnswerHis Holiness, John Paul I died in bed of a heart attack, we are not positive, as an autopsy was not performed - as is usual. He was not murdered, despite wild rumors to the contrary.

The official cause of death is listed as a massive heart attack. However, no autopsy was performed so there is nothing to prove or disprove that diagnosis. There is also no evidence that he was murdered but there are a number of people in the Vatican who would have benefited if he were removed as pope.

The official cause of death is a heart attack. However, this was apparently based on a cursory examination of the deceased pope's body, an examination so brief that the diagnosis has been ridiculed by medical experts. The pope's personal physician said that John Paul I was in excellent health, had low blood pressure and was an unlikely candidate for a heart attack.

Others say that the pope may have been killed by poisoning. Some of the evidence is consistent with such a conclusion, although this can only remain speculation. No autopsy was performed, although a precedent had been set for an autopsy where the cause of death has not been positively established. The body was embalmed with unseemly haste, and the papal apartment cleared of all possible evidence within a single day.

The most telling evidence for a possible conclusion of murder is that the day before his death he is reported to have informed Cardinal Baggio that he planned to move demote him, and discussed with Cardinal Villot, Vatican Secretary of State, plans to remove key personnel from office then asked Villot for his resignation the following morning. If murder had been suspected, Baggio and Villot would have been key suspects, but they could also have innocently informed others whom the pope would move against. There would be many within the Vatican with the motive and opportunity to murder their pope.
