She accepted the role in life that she was born into, like most people in those days, from the top to the bottom of society. She could have refused the throne if she had really wanted to - she had a male cousin the same age, who would have been just as acceptable to the British elite - but that would have been highly unusual behaviour. Only a handful of people have ever refused or abdicated a European throne, and in most cases it was either because they were of a different religion than their subjects (e.g. Queen Christina of Sweden) or because they were too old (e.g. the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V).
