The Roman Republic lasted from the time of the kings until the civil wars in the first century BCE. The first Roman ruler that we call an emperor was Gaius Octavius -- or Augustus -- who ruled from 27 BCE to 14 CE. He didn't call himself an emperor, but "princips" or "first citizen." What shifted rome from a republic to an empire?

Nothing. Rome was an empire during the republic. An empire is defined as "a major political unit having territory of great extent or a number of territories or peoples under a single sovereign authority". The Roman republic filled these requirements as it had provinces and territories and ruled all under Roman law. What many people erroneously call the "Roman Empire" is actually the Roman Principate as it was already an empire when the so-called emperors took over. The principate was able to come into being after the civil war between Octavian and Antony because the republican form of government had decayed and fallen apart and society was ready for a stable form of government.Nothing. What did the eastern roman empire eventually come?

The eastern part of the Roman Empire became the surviving part of the Roman Empire. It was not affected by the invasions by the Germanic peoples which led to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire and continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years. Historians have coined the term Byzantine Empire to indicate this part of the empire after the fall of the western part.
