There was some panic obviously associated with the events of 9/11, however it would not be accurate to label all or most activity after the attacks as hysterical. By and large, with the exception of several industries, life just went on for most of the US. It isn't that the rest of us did not notice what was happening on our East Coast, but our daily responsibilities took precedent over things we could do nothing about.
