Stienbeck moved from California to New York, in 1925, to try and make it as a free lance writer. He failed and moved back to California. He wrote several novels and short stories before finding success with the book 'Tortilla Flat' This book was full of a rough humor, that wasn't followed in most of his following books. He wrote several stories dealing with social themes in a serious vein. As he aged, some critics would say his works improved.
He won the Nobel in 1962, the same year one of his most popular books, "Travels With Charlie" appeared.
