France was initially an Allied power, but later part of the Axis. After the fall of France in 1940 during the German blitz, some elements of "Free France" took shelter overseas. However, the portions of France to the south not under German control were administered by the successor French Government, or Vichy France, which was led by none other than Petain, the hero of Verdun. Vichy France sided with the Axis Powers, and the first American casualties in the Atlantic Theater were in fact by French troops.

1918-1934 That answer is rubbish! Austria was part of Germany until 1866. Germany untied with Austria as allies in World War One, and in World War Two, Hitler formed an 'Anschluss', or pact, giving over power of Austria to him, so technically Austria was never invaded by Germany, because they allied with Germany.
