distributing land to poor
The Gracchi tried to instill an early form of socialism on the republic. They pushed for free grain for the urban poor and for land reform for the displaced peasants. It was this land reform and their confiscation of patrician lands that got them eventually killed. The Gracchi brothers have been seen as precursors of socialism by modern socialists who idealised them. Socialism arose in the 19th century. The Gracchi brothers did not have any notion of socialism and thus did not try to instil an early form of socialism. There were just trying to address the plight of landless peasant. The reform also sought to establish private holdings for these peasants, which is not very socialistic.
Tiberius Gracchus was assisted with the implementation of his reform which provided for the redistribution of land for the poor by Appius Claudius, his father-in-law, the consul and jurist Publius Mucius Scaevola and his brother Publius Licinius Crassus Dives Mucianus, who was the Pontifex Maximus. Many of his friends were polulares, members of the popularis, a political faction which championed the cause of the poor and wanted reforms to improve their condition. He also must have had many friends among the poor plebeians.
While the small farmers' land was protected while away on military service, the large landowners stole the common land on which the majority relied to graze their ploughing ox and gather fruits. This crippled them, and started the beginnings of the civil wars when the Gracchi brothers were murdered by the aristocrats for trying to protect the small farmer rights.
