The Social Gospel was a reform movement by liberal clergy to apply Christian ethics to social justice issues. President Grover Cleveland was a Democrat, but was not able to end the Depression, or do much to help the American people. Thus, though he was on the reformers side, Cleveland did not do much to help them achieve their goals.

President Cleveland did not explicitly oppose the Social Gospel movement. However, he was generally skeptical of government intervention in social and economic matters, which aligned with his conservative ideology. This meant that his policies did not necessarily align with the goals of the Social Gospel movement, which advocated for more government involvement in addressing social issues and improving the lives of the poor and marginalized.
