He wasn't born to a particularly wealthy family. His personal fortunes varied considerably.

As a retired general, Grant would have had a reasonable pension. However, he forfeited this when he became president, and at the end of his presidency embarked on a world tour that depleted most of his savings. He placed his remaining assets in an investment banking partnership, and his partner swindled him (and other investors), bankrupted the company, and fled. Grant wound up heavily in debt.

He learned about the same time that he had throat cancer. Terminally ill, he began writing his memoirs, finishing them only a few days before his death. Mark Twain had offered Grant a generous contract for the Memoirs, and his family wound up eventually receiving nearly a half million dollars from the book, enough to wipe out the debt. (Congress also voted to restore his military pension, so he had some income while he was writing, but wouldn't have been considered "wealthy" due to his large debts.)
