∙ 6y agoVirgina had two state governments, a Unionist one and a Confederate one, both claiming to be the legitimate state government of Virgina.
The Unionist Virgina state goverment created the State of West Virgina out of part of Western Virgina. From the Unionist state goverment's point of view, West Virgina and Virgina were both Union states.
The Confederate state goverment did not reginise the Unionist state goverment's creation of West Virgina. From the Confederate state goverment's point of view, there was no West Virgina to be a Union or Confederate state; the so-caled "State of West Virgina" was part of Virgina, and Virgina was a Confederate state.
West Virginia was a Union state, it was also called a border state. West Virginia remained in the Union even though it was a slave state.

∙ 8y agoThe western part of Virginia did not want to secede from the Union, and this section of Virginia was never a large "slave holding " area. Early Union military operations in the US Civil War separated the western portion of Virginia. In 1863, West Virginia became the 35th US state. Credit for helping the western part of Virginia "leave" Virginia is given to General George B. McClellan.
