In 1786, a 22-year-old French nobleman, Marquis de Pelier, was arrested by the police of King Louis XVI, and promptly locked in solitary confinement.

His crime, whistling at the king's wife, Queen Marie Antoinette.

Over the next 50 years, the French monarchy gave way to the Revolution and the First Republic, then the Napoleonic Empire, then the Bourbon Restoration.

But the marquis remained in prison for his petty offense.

In 1836, after a half-century behind bars, the marquis was finally released, 72 years old and broken in health.

By that time, the woman at whom the unfortunate Frenchman was accused of whistling had been dead for 43 years.
