Elasmosaurus was not a dinosaur. It was a type of long necked plesiosaur, a group of marine reptiles living only during the Mesozoic. They had, of course, long necks and swam with the use of flippers; they didn't have tails capable of propulsion. They were predatory, eating fish, and probably spent their entire lives in the water.
