Swanbourne was named for Swanbourne House, in Swanbourne, Buckinghamshire, the family seat of Thomas Fremantle, 1st Baron Cottesloe, a prominent Tory politician and his brother Admiral Sir Charles Fremantle, for whom the city of Fremantle was named.
The city of Fremantle was named after Captain Charles Fremantle who was sent to take formal possession of the remainder of New Holland which had not already been claimed for Britain under the territory of New South Wales. On 2 May 1829, Captain Fremantle raised the Union Jack on the south head of the Swan River, thus claiming the territory for Britain.
It was named for Admiral Sir William Penn the father of the Colony's Founder William Penn by King Charles II. Admiral Penn was a member of the Church of England and it was his son that became a Quaker at the age of 22.
