Was Imperialism a positive or negative force in history?

There were good kings and bad kings. It all depends on how they treated their subjects. If the only two options are was it positive or negative, the answer is... yes, it was both positive and negative. Positive in most cases. Now you have to study more to find out what the benefits were to the subjects of Imperialism.

I'm going to answer for imperialism worldwide. You see, imperialism such as in ancient Rome was outside of the mother country, you see, Rome's' actual borders were around Italy but their "sphere of influence" was extended trough out the whole of the Mediterranean world. To answer your question, i would say neither, for many reasons, historians could argue positive or negative, for some of the negative reasons could be that the country being invaded by an imperialist neighbor may be destroyed, their civilians mistreated and often paid little [political] attention on the mother country's homeland. On the other side the imperialist country may become richer, its military glorified, its inhabitants praised and its leader Adored. To answer your question, it is purely your opinion but imperialist, like any other political system is both good and bad.
