In 1901, there was little that you could consider household trash. The closest that comes to it was cleaning the ashes from the hearth or stove, most everything else was recycled or burned (everything was made of natural materials, no plastics then). When I was a child, a man with a horse and wagon would come down the street calling out "Rags" "Rags" "Rags". He collected used clothing, which were all natural fibers. He made his living selling the rags to manufacturers of many things. There were other people who made their living in a similar manner.

If your microwave is a typical small one, they probably will take it. If it's a larger, built-in model they may not. If your city contracts out the trash service they probably have info on their government website about trash pickup policies.
Whether or not you can take things left for trash legally depends on the state. In most cases probably not because the trash in located on someone else's property and you do not have permission to do so.
