Yes, technically it was. Japan allied with Britain in 1902, and when World War I broke out in 1914, Japan offered to join the war if they could keep the German colonies in the Pacific and China. Japan subsequently captured those German colonies.
Interestingly, Japan and the US were already having diplomatic issues regarding China (Japan wanted to conquer parts of it, and actually already had taken Taiwan), so when the US joined the war in 1917, the two countries had to come to an agreement to not use the war to force new concessions on China (which Japan wound up doing anyway).
