Was king Charles the 1 unpopular?

In an age without newspapers, paparazzi and Internet any king was in the eyes of the 'common' people a distant figure to be treated with reverence and to be cheered when he went out into the streets. Charles I only heard people shouting "God bless king Charles!" until the moment he was led to his trial.

Among the leading figures and the members of Parliament of his Realm he was not very popular. He was a stubborn and not very outgoing man by all accounts, very convinced of his divine right to rule as he pleased, leaning towards Catholicism and a bit of a double-dealer.
