The first King of Israel is King Saul, He was appointed King by the Prophet Samuel, Saul was considered a horrible King due to his sense of humility, but after awhile Saul became the King the Jews wanted / needed. King Saul's Reign only lasted two years due to defying the commandment of God, he did not wipe out the anti-Jew race ( sorry forgot what their name was ).

In the absence of a United Monarchy, Jeroboam would be the first king of Israel (1 Kings 12:20) - after Rehoboam became king of Judah on the death of his father Solomon. However, some scholars believe that the first real king of Israel was Omri(c. 880 BCE).
