Yes, Montaigne was a Catholic, both by infant baptism and adult belief. That his Essays were at one time on the Vatican's Index has nothing to do with the fact of his religious belief. He wrote respectfully of Scripture, and insisted that Reason, without, left floating without the Church, "is lost...." During his last illness, he asked to have Mass said at his home.
