Polygamy has always been an exception, even in Araba pre and post Islam. The Quran did NOT encourage polygamy, it actually restricted it and adviced avoidance due to difficulty of treating women equally in matters of the heart and the the consequence this would cause regarding martial problems.
Those who engage in polygyny tend to me wealthy and thus financially able to provide for more than one woman, hence the opinion that polygamy caused a deterioration of position is without much basis in reality.
According to The Cambridge History of Islam, polygamy did exist in pre-Islamic Arabia, but was the exception. The Quran encouraged polygamy and this now became one of the essential features of the Islamic law of marriage. It led to a definite deterioration in the position of married women in society, compared with that which they had previously enjoyed.

Polygamy is practiced by many different groups worldwide. It is a common cultural practice in many parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Many Muslims and some Christians practice polygamy as a part of their religion. Polygamy is illegal in the US and most western countries, but many still practice it in secret.

Polygamy was practiced in Mormonism many years ago, but is not currently practiced by Mormons today. It is highly unlikely that the kid's family practices polygamy._______While there is a possibility that "this guy"'s family practices polygamy, it is very unlikely. It is true that polygamy, the practice of having multiple wives, was once a part of Mormon tradition, times have changed a great deal since the religion was first founded. It was in 1890 that polygamy was officially rejected as a part of Mormonism, though some sects continue to practice it.______Additionally, no sects practice polygamy that are officially part of the church. If you were to practice polygamy now, you would be kicked out of the church... therefore, any "real" Mormon (member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) would NOT be a polygamist, so your friend in high school almost certainly is notthe people of FLDS practice poligamy they are not Mormons though
