Pres. Taylor was elected President as a member of the Whig Party, which lasted between 1834-1856. The party split in the issue of slavery. The Conscience Whigs of New England and Mid-Atlantic States supported the abolition of slavery. The Cotton Whigs of the South, supported the expansion of slavery to the western territories of the United States. The Whig party also opposed the policies of President Andrew Jackson, which some members calling the President, "King Andrew". The Whig party had states' rights advocates, supporters of the American System, and in some respect supported the use of federal action when dealing with national problems. To say these views are liberal or conservative remains to be seen. After the party split due to the slavery issue, the Conscience Whigs joined the Republican Party while the Cotton Whigs joined the Democratic Party.
