What were the early military goals of the Confederacy?

Confederate President Jefferson Davis spoke to a crowd of Southerners in February 1862. He described the early military strategy of the Confederacy. The objective had been to protect every part of the South from attacks by the Union. This was a logical idea in that recruits were needed from all Southern states and that would be reduced wherever Union forces controlled Southern territory. This also would protect supplies needed by the military. Additionally, it was a political necessity to protect all the states that placed themselves at great risk by joining the Confederacy.

What was the extent of the damage to the Confederacy made by Jefferson Davis when he vetoed a bill to appoint a general in chief in 1862?

It's difficult to pinpoint the extent of the damage caused by Jefferson Davis' veto to create the position of general in chief. However, with that said, it's clear that governing the Confederacy and in a defacto manner being the Confederate general in chief divided his large responsibilities. As president he was a political leader of course, and clearly, at times his military decisions on appointing Confederate generals were sometimes political decisions rather than military ones. As an aside, US President Lincoln appointed general in chiefs, the reality, however, was that he was much like Jefferson Davis by becoming far to involved in military operations. This caused problems among his military leaders and created political critics on his methods of handling the Union war effort.

What was one of Lieutenant General US Grant's political responsibilities when he arrived in Virginia in 1864?

Lieutenant General Grant had a "mountain" of military objectives when he was promoted to his high rank, which he gladly looked forward to. Of course the military objectives for the North centered around Richmond, Virginia and the Army of Northern Virginia. It seems that President Lincoln, the press and the general public saw a political duty as well. He was expected to fight against and defeat General Robert E. Lee. This had become a political situation in that Lee represented the "face" of the Confederacy. What was now the top general for the Union had to engage and defeat the top general of the Confederacy.
