Yes, slavery was very bad in pretty much all cases. People were taken against their will, and then forced to work with no pay and strict rules. If they didn't work, they were beaten or had to miss a meal etc.

So, if they had ended there slavery, south America's could not have been that bad. However, that is not to say that there still wasn't slavery. There is still slavery till this day in certain countries. Was it as bad in the 1930s in south America no, did it still exists, probably.

In many cases, slaves in Africa could become free after working for a period of time, while many in Europe and America were born and died as slaves. That being said, Europe and the United States has since banned slavery and effectively enforces anti-servitude laws. Slavery in Africa is still very much alive.
