the legend says that the Aztecs where searching for an eagle eating a snake on top of a nopal in a small island in the middle of a lake (those prophecies where more specific) so they just placed the city there, but the real reason was because it was near water. So, the Aztecs used the water for transportation and drinks. Also, it was surrounded by mountains and that gave them protection.
Tenochtitlan was an ideal site for a city because the city was actually built on a lake. This provided the necessary water and protection that they needed to flourish. Causeways and bridges were the only land access into the city and therefore, mass invasions were difficult because armies could not be moved quickly into the city.
Not only that, but because they were on a lake, the Aztec were able to build Chinampas, which resembled floating gardens. These allowed the Aztecs to be self-sufficient and provide their own food, even during times of siege.
