How did the Fall of Tenochtitlan change the Americas?

The fall of Tenochtitlan was one of several turnings points for the Spaniards being able to maintain forces in Central America. Because the Spaniards were able to conquer Tenochtitlan (and later, other South American cities/countries), an entire culture slowly started to fade. The Spanish language and Spanish customs soon quickly became the prevailing language/culture in Central America. Not only that, but Christianity was introduced to the Natives.

Today, while many Indian Languages do exist, as the youth try to assimilate into the Spanish culture, they are slowly leaving that life behind them. In a few more generations, it is highly likely that many of these languages will be extinct and near-forgotten.

What did Hernando Cortes discover?

Cortez didn't actually discover anything new, but he is famous for conquering Mexico in the 16th Century. Born in Spain, he traveled to the New World in search of fame and fortune at the age of 19. He landed in what is now Mexico in 1519, and eventually conquered it from the Aztec empire of Montezuma. Cortes then founded Mexico City on the site of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlán. He became the rule of "New Spain", as it was called at the time. He also introduced European diseases to the Aztecs, which would kill roughly 80% of them. With those left, he forced them to melt the gold the Aztec leader had, and so he carried back tons of gold to Spain. He had held the Aztec Leader captive; he made him transfer to Christianity and taught him to speak Spanish. When Cortez was done, there was no use for him anymore, so he was burned at the stake.I think it he was burned alive.

Conquistador of Mexico. His secretary described him as ruthless, haughty, quarrelsome, and much given to women, qualities that served him well. He sailed to Hispaniola in 1504 and in 1511 joined an expedition to Cuba.

What is Tenochtitlan like?

It was a city of more than 200,000 people around 1519 AD, founded by the Aztec empire in 1325. It was scattered between several islands on the Lake Texcoco and most islands were joined together by large stone bridges.

The largest island had an approximate area of 13.5 square kilometers (5.2 sq mi) and contained most public structures, such as the Main Temple, the Tlatelolco Market and the Calmecac(school for the children of Aztec nobility, for religious and military training). It was traversed by several canals, so that goods and people could be transported via canoe. Nowadays, it would be seen as the pre-Columbian version of Venice, Italy.

Most public structures were made of stone and were quite tall for the age; for instance the Main Temple measured some 80 by 100 meters (262 x 328 ft) and had a height of approximately 30 meters (98 ft). Commoners usually lived on the outskirts of the city, either on smaller islands or on the shores of the Texcoco. Water was brought in via two terracotta aqueducts from the western hills of the valley.

How was Tenochtitlan built?

Before Tenochtitlan was founded, the Aztecs were a nomadic people whose religion stated that whenever they saw a golden eagle, perched atop a cactus and devouring a snake, they had to settle and build a 'great city'. They found such sign in a swampy, small island in Lake Texcoco. This prophecy was immortalized in the Mexican coat of arms.

Now, not deterred by the unfavourable terrain, they set about building their city, using the chinampa system (misnamed as "floating gardens") for agriculture and to dry and expand the island. Basically, such system requires building levees and then filling the reclaimed land with soil. Such system was also implemented - faster and with better technology, of course - by the Dutch people to reclaim land from the sea.
The wandering "Aztec" tribe saw a vision of an eagle on a cactus, and this was foretold to them that this sign would signal the place where they should settle and build their city on a "promised land".
