The greatest concern with the British government was with the concept that there was no one in Parlaiment to speak for the colonies. With this in mind a number of issues came up such as taxation without representation, being limited on who the colonies can trade with, etc.

Why did some colonists believe that they should not be taxed?

After the seven years' war, the British decided that the colonists should pay for the war debt and the army cost because the British were defending the Americans. The Americans retaliated because they thought that because they fought along side the British, and in their viewpoint, for the British, they shouldn't have to pay for something that was not their problem.

Did the Americans or the British have the better argument with regard to the taxation problem?

Primarily the Colonists argued that because they had no voice in the distant British Parliament they should not be subjected to British taxes (and some other British demands). The slogan was, "No taxation without representation." Then when Britain decided to require the Colonists pay taxes to help with the debts Britain incurred in their war with France, the Colonists rebelled.

Why were taxes implemented in the colonies?

Taxes were implemented in the British colonies of North America to help pay for the various wars the Empire was engaged in. Since the American colonies were among the wealthiest in the British Empire it made sense to Parliment to tax them to help pay the bills for the defense of the British Empire. The problem with this was that the colonies had often times had to defend themselves against Native Americans, the French and Spanish. It made little sense to Americans for them to have to pay to once to defend themselves and then pay again to defend an entire empire.
