At the beginning of the Revolution it was more about sharing ideas, and although there was a lot of anger it was considered more peaceful. However, in about 1792, the French Revolution took a violent turn. The government was weak, and the King saw his job was becoming obsolete so he declared war even though the government was not unified enough at that point to have a fair chance. After this everybody was angry and the revolution became a bloody insurrection. Also when Robespierre was a big figure the Revolution was almost a killing spree. Robespierre and his partner Danton, were afraid of internal enemies. They put on trial and killed many people (the exact number is debated) in an extremely short amount of time.
