Why did the US agree to become involved in the Korean and Vietnam war?
Both the Korean and Vietnam wars occurred during the "cold war". This was the time after WWII that the U.S and the Soviet Union were having an arms race against each other. Another aspect of the cold war was that each country was trying to turn many other countries either communist (like Soviet Union) or democratic (like the U.S). Both the Vietnam and Korean wars were proxy wars. What this means is that they were wars where each country used a weaker country to fight "for" them. In both Vietnam and Korea , the Soviets had North Korea and North Vietnam and we had the south parts of both. Basically both wars were a way for the U.S and Russia to fight without actually declaring war against each other specifically. The U.S won the Korean War against Russia, and Russia won the Vietnam war against the U.S.

Korea & Vietnam were full scaled LIMITED wars (no nukes) against communism during the cold war. Cuba was covert, with operations extending into Central and South America, led by one of Castro's most able Lieutenants (See: Che Gueverra). The only time Cuba nearly went "hot" was during the Cuban Missile Crisis of '62; and that confrontation was against the Soviet Union...not Cuba. The Soviets backed down...obviously, no nuclear war occurred.

the USA decided that they wanted to stop the spread of communism which would trigger the domino theory. The domino theory was that if a single country fell to communism then the surrounding countries would fall as well. The USA had also signed the Truman Doctrine that would enable them to go into any country that was at threat of falling to communism and fight to prevent it. Thus the USA decided that Korea and Vietnam were at threat of falling to communism and intended to stop the spread of communism in Asia

The cold war was a military stand off between the communist world and the free world. Korea and Vietnam was the only opportunity for those two enemies to shoot it out with each other. Another words, the communists and the free world didn't have a "cold war" in Korea and Vietnam...those were hot wars (hot battles=actually at war with one another). A cold war is NOT a war. It is only an expression...cold being the opposite of hot. In Vietnam and Korea, the communist world tested their weapons against the free world forces and the free world forces tested their weapons against each other. Example(s): Soviet built or designed MiG 17 & MiG 21's and Red Chinese built MiG 19 (J6 versions) flown by the North Vietnamese Air Force fought against US jets over the skies of North Vietnam. This experience created the TOP GUN school (dog fighting school at Miramar Naval Air Station CA in about 1969). The aerial combat also pitted 1950's cold war thought (theory) against communist theories. The USAF F100 Super Sabre was about equal to the communist MiG 19 jet fighter. For the USN, the F8 Crusader was about equal to the MiG 19 jet. These machines were ulitimately eclipsed by the superb F4 Phantom II.
