Any native American group was "nice" to its friends (whatever "nice" means), but historically could be cruel, savage and extremely violent towards anyone considered to be an enemy. You would not wish to be anywhere near if they took a dislike to you.

In 1782 the American Captain William Crawford was captured after a brief battle with Delawares (an Algonquian tribe). The Delawares were furious about a previous attack on their people by American militia and they took out their revenge on Crawford in a most brutal and barbaric manner. He was savagely tortured for hours before being burned alive.

This incident prompted General George Washington to instruct his troops never to permit themselves to be taken alive by the natives.

Algonquian is not the name of a tribe, but a very large family of related languages spoken by tribes in many parts of Canada and the USA, including the Cree, Ojibwe, Blackfoot, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Menominee, Sac and Fox, Delaware, Abenaki, Mohegan, Powhatan, Wappinger, Pennacook, Algonquin and very many more.
