No and yes.
The primary purpose of dropping the atomic bombs on Japan was to try to end the war faster.
However both had a secondary purpose as weapons effects tests to determine actual type and amount of damage produced by the new bombs compared to use of massive firebombing attacks with conventional bombs. This was why they selected target cities that had not been significantly bombed already and then the cities on this target listed were then made "prohibited firebombing targets", to make estimation of damage due to the atomic bombs simpler.
A tertiary purpose was to verify yields: the MK-I yield was not known as it had never been tested before use and the MK-III yield although known from the Trinity Test needed to be confirmed if it was reproducible from bomb to bomb.

a similar model of the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima was tested by the Americans prior to the bomb drop.
but the Americans did not know how big or how small the explosion was going to be on the city of Hiroshima
