Eli Whitney's cotton gin
The invention that had a huge impact on the economy of the southern US before the Civil War was the cotton gin. Invented by Eli Whitney in 1793, the cotton gin revolutionized the cotton industry by automating the process of removing seeds from cotton fibers. This boosted cotton production and made it more profitable for southern planters, solidifying the region's dependence on slave labor and leading to the expansion of cotton plantations.
The ability to produce short-staple cotton Virginia, but removing seeds from the cotton bolls was so labor intensive that growing short-staple cotton was only marginally profitable. That situation changed after Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1793. With the seed extraction problem solved, short-staple cotton became the South's major industry. Cotton became king.
Extremism and failures of leadership made the Civik War inevitable by feeding sectionalism in the North and South.
The invention of the cotton gin actually revived a dying slavery demand.

cotton because of the cotton gin.......................i think
The cotton gin did not cause the Civil War. The civil war was about slavery. The south wanted slavery and power. They got tired of the North's rules and so they rebelled, causing the Civil War. <><><> Agree with above. The Cotton Gin DID make it feasible to grow cotton on a large scale in the South, and THAT required cheap labor to tend and harvest the crop- tending to make slavery economically attractive.
Mainly for cotton farming from the help of the cotton gin.

cotton gin
During the Civil War, there WAS no machinery to pick cotton- it was picked by hand. The machine that was used to separate the cotton fiber from the seeds was the Cotton Gin (as in engine).
Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1793. Since it made cotton processing much easier, the production of cotton goods boomed. In the south before the civil war, the agricultural industry became the largest industry. Slavery also greatly increased because people saw that slaves could make them a large amount of money through cotton picking. In a way, the cotton gin helped cause the civil war.
