Anyone who has read Karl Marx knows that members of a communist society are expected to contribute according to their abilities and take according to their need. Thus the more capable a person is, the more he would be expected to contribute. The less needy a person is, the less he would voluntarily take. Marx knew that this was not human nature, at least human nature as it was in 1848 when "The Communist Manifesto" was written. His theory of communism held that after the overthrow of capitalism there would be a period of socialism perhaps for generations until the last vestiges of capitalist thought was wiped out. At that time, Marx felt human nature would be such that individuals would freely give according to their abilities and take only according to their needs. He was wrong. It never happened.
