No. It was necessary to appease a loving, caring, compassionate, and yet utterly righteous and holy God.

In a Christian context God was not angry or vengeful, rather He was loving enough to sacrifice His only Son, Jesus; which was necessary to bring atonement between man and God. To God the crucifixion of Jesus Christ was the final peace offering that would pave the way for man to come back to God through His son, Jesus; saying that 'all who believe in Him may not perish but have everlasting life' - John 3:14.

Additional thoughts:

The God of The Bible is a 'lover of justice', righteous and upright (Psalm 33:4-6).

Adam, created as a perfect man (Genesis 1:27+31), used his free will to selfishly rebel against his creator. The sin of Adam brought sickness and death to his yet-unborn descendants, all mankind (Romans 5:12), and required a 'ransom' be paid in exchange, perfect life for perfect life (1 Corinthians 15:45+47)(Exodus 21:24)(Colossians 1:13+14). Jesus, born a perfect man, replaced Adam as our 'father', and gave us, once again, the hope of everlasting life(Genesis 1:28/2:17/3:17-19)(Romans 6:23)by dying faithful to God, and pouring out his blood in our behalf (Hebrews 9:22/Ephesians 1:7/Mark 14:24/1John1:7). Sin causes death(Romans 6:23), but obedience to God (Matthew 7:21-23) and faith in Jesus' sacrifice, hold the promise of everlasting life (John 17:3)(John 3:16).

More thoughts:

Since the beginning of the working out of God's Plan for mankind, He has always wanted us to live and obey Him who is our Loving Creator:

Deuteronomy 30:19-20New King James Version (NKJV)

19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; 20 that you may love the LORD your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He isyour life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them."

He so loved us all that He willing gave His Son to suffer and die on our behalf:

John 3:16New King James Version (NKJV)

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Sounds like God is totally loving, forgiving, merciful, longsuffering for His creatures.
