Germany was not divided as a result of the containment theory, but it definitely suffered under it. The containment theory was based on the idea that if one country becomes communist, it will become a chain reaction and more and more countries would also become communist. Therefore, it was the world's job to stop this from happening and "contain" the spread of communism. The US didn't really fight against the USSR on German soil to prevent more communism, like it did in Vietnam.
