The religion of ancient Rome was for most of its recorded history a basic polytheism: many gods and goddesses were recognized as real and deserving of reverence of some kind, although certain gods (especially the God of War) were afforded special status. In later periods, monotheism became more prevalent, with Christianity, in particular, becoming the official religion of the Empire in the 4th century C.E.
