Yes the u.v.f. was formed to oppose home rule in ulster by Sir Edward Carson in 1913. With the outbreak of war and the need for more soldiers Lord Kitchener appealed for volunteers. Sir Edward Carson offered the vast army he had at his disposal The U.V.F. became the 36th (Ulster) division who was one of very few divisions who met their objective on 1st July 1916 (the first day of the battle of the Somme). As divisions fighting on either side of the Ulstermen failed their objective this left the 36th Ulster stranded and surrounded by German guns and they were slaughtered. In one day they suffered 5500 casualties including killed wounded or missing.
